Understand the minimum limits
The Texas Department of Insurance lists minimum auto liability limits of $30,000 for bodily injury to one person, $60,000 for bodily injury per accident, and $25,000 for property damage per accident. These are often written as 30/60/25. Liability covers qualifying damage you cause to others; it is not coverage for repairs to your own car. See the Texas Department of Insurance auto guide.
Compare the coverage, not just the monthly payment
Ask for quotes with the same limits and deductibles. Discuss collision, comprehensive, uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage and personal injury protection, along with any lender requirements. A lower premium can reflect different protection. Check the total policy cost, fees and payment schedule before deciding. The Texas Office of Public Insurance Counsel shopping guide has questions to help compare offers.
Prepare for a conversation
Have your current declarations page, drivers, vehicles, garaging address and intended vehicle use ready. Tell the agent about delivery or rideshare work and the date you want coverage to begin. Ask which discounts you qualify for; savings and eligibility depend on the insurer and your circumstances.
