Why CoverToday

Relay or DSP — two different Amazon programs

Two Amazon programs get confused all the time. Amazon Relay is for independent for-hire trucking carriers — semis and box trucks hauling Amazon freight between facilities on their own MC authority. Amazon DSP (Delivery Service Partner) is contracted last-mile parcel delivery, running vans on residential routes under the Amazon brand. They carry different insurance. Amazon’s system auto-rejects any certificate that doesn’t list the exact required limits and endorsements, so a policy that’s “close” still blocks your loads. We build the certificate Amazon actually accepts — same day.

Coverage

What it covers

Auto liability — $1,000,000

Per-occurrence commercial auto, the Relay minimum for your tractors and box trucks.

Motor truck cargo — $100,000

Relay requires $100k; a $50k cargo policy gets rejected at the portal.

General liability — $1M / $2M

$1,000,000 per occurrence with a $2,000,000 aggregate — carriers often have the per-occurrence but miss the aggregate.

Trailer interchange — $50,000

Required when you pull Amazon-owned trailers; a common gap that blocks new Relay carriers.

Workers’ comp + $100k EL

Statutory workers’ comp plus $100,000 Employers Liability for carriers with W-2 drivers.

DSP / last-mile add-ons

Commercial auto (~$1M CSL), GL, workers’ comp, and hired/non-owned + umbrella for parcel-van fleets.

Pricing

How much it costs

Cost depends on the program and your fleet. Relay carriers price on trucks, radius, driver records, and cargo type, and must carry higher limits ($1M auto, $100k cargo, $1M/$2M GL, $50k trailer interchange) than most freight lanes — so budget above a bare-bones truck policy. DSP last-mile fleets price on the number of vans, drivers, and payroll for workers’ comp. As an independent broker we shop multiple trucking markets to hit Amazon’s limits at the best available rate, and issue the certificate the same day.

Requirements

Who needs it

Amazon Relay requires, per Amazon’s own insurance guidance: auto liability $1,000,000 per occurrence, motor truck cargo $100,000, general liability $1,000,000 per occurrence / $2,000,000 aggregate, trailer interchange $50,000 (for operators pulling Amazon trailers), workers’ compensation per state law plus $100,000 Employers Liability, and an MC number that has been active for at least 180 days before you can haul. Amazon DSP / last-mile carriers instead need their own commercial auto (typically ~$1,000,000 CSL — Amazon does not provide it for independent last-mile), general liability, and workers’ comp for W-2 drivers, often with hired/non-owned auto and umbrella. State financial-responsibility minimums (e.g. California 15/30/5) are far below what Amazon’s contract requires — quoting the state minimum is a classic mistake that voids the contract.

FAQ

Common questions

What insurance does Amazon Relay require?

Auto liability $1,000,000, motor truck cargo $100,000, general liability $1,000,000 per occurrence / $2,000,000 aggregate, trailer interchange $50,000 (when pulling Amazon trailers), and workers’ comp plus $100,000 Employers Liability for W-2 drivers.

Why won’t Amazon let my new company haul freight yet?

Relay requires your MC (motor carrier) authority to have been active for at least 180 days before you can load Amazon freight. Brand-new authorities have to wait — plan your start date around it.

Is DSP insurance different from Relay?

Yes. DSP / last-mile is local parcel delivery in vans — you need your own commercial auto (about $1M CSL), general liability, and workers’ comp for W-2 drivers, often with hired/non-owned and umbrella. Relay is for-hire semi/box-truck freight with the higher Relay limits and trailer interchange.

Do I need workers’ comp if my drivers are 1099?

W-2 drivers require workers’ comp plus $100,000 Employers Liability. Misclassifying employees as 1099 to skip it is a common way Amazon contracts get voided and claims denied — we help you get the classification and coverage right.

Can I get a certificate today?

Often the same day. We build it with the exact limits and endorsements Amazon’s portal checks, so it isn’t bounced back.

Is my state-minimum auto policy enough for Amazon?

No. State minimums (like California’s 15/30/5) are far below Amazon’s contract limits. Amazon requires $1,000,000 auto and the other Relay limits — a state-minimum policy leaves you uncovered and locked out of loads.
