Frequently asked questions

How old do I need to be to get a California learner’s permit?
You must be at least 15½ years old. Applicants under 17½ must also complete an approved driver education course before taking the knowledge test.
Is this practice test official?
No — this is a free educational tool from CoverToday based on the California Driver’s Handbook. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by the DMV. Always verify current rules in the official handbook.
Is the practice test available in Russian?
Yes — the full practice test, flashcards, and study mode are available in Russian at covertoday.com/ru/dmv-practice-test.
What should I study for the permit test?
The California Driver’s Handbook covers everything on the test. The most commonly missed areas are right-of-way rules, speed limits for special situations (school zones, railroad crossings, uncontrolled intersections), alcohol laws, and sign shapes and colors — all covered in this practice tool.
